Quickstart

  1. Run it. agentwaste has no dependencies and needs Python 3.10 or newer.

    Terminal window
    uvx agentwaste

By default it reads the last 30 days of Claude Code sessions from ~/.claude/projects. No Claude Code history yet? Add --demo to see a report on synthetic sessions.

uvx runs agentwaste without installing it. For a permanent agentwaste command, install it once with uv tool install agentwaste or pipx install agentwaste. The examples below use the installed command; without installing, put uvx in front.

  2. Read the report. This is the --demo output:

    agentwaste: 13 sessions, 1,207 model calls, 1,207 tool calls (2026-09-22 to 2026-10-04)
    Priced input: 29.8M token-equivalents (cache writes 10.7M, cache reads 151.8M, fresh 1.3M; output 602.7k)
    Estimated waste: 12.2M (41%) Grade: D
    30.1% Re-caching after idle breaks (55x, 9.0M eq)
    - demo-app: 55x
Fix: The prompt cache expires after 5 minutes idle, so the next message re-writes the
whole context at 1.25x. Run /compact (or /clear) before a break, finish a thought before
    ...

Findings are sorted by waste. Each one shows how often it happened, its cost in token-equivalents, the worst examples and a fix.

  3. Share your card (optional).

    Terminal window
    agentwaste --card my-card.html

A single HTML file with your grade and top waste categories, and nothing else. See Sharing your card.

Terminal window
agentwaste --days 7 # just the last week (default 30; 0 = everything)
agentwaste --usd-per-mtok 3 # add dollar estimates at $3 per million input tokens
agentwaste --json > waste.json # machine-readable output
agentwaste --demo # try it on synthetic sessions
